African Film Series: "Adwa: An African Victory" (1999)

Primary tabs

Adwa is the name of a town in northern Ethiopia. It is also the site of a major 19th century battle between Africans and Italians. In the 1800s most of Africa was occupied by European colonial powers. The kingdom of Ethiopia was an exception. In 1896 the Italians tried to take it over but were overwhelmingly defeated in the Battle of Adwa. Director Haile Gerima’s documentary takes us back to Adwa a hundred years after the event. Drawing on testimonies, photographs, and paintings, Gerima revisits this history in order to celebrate the spirit of African resistance against colonialism.
