Study: Binge drinking may disrupt immune systems of healthy young adults

Primary tabs

The Huffington Post (12/31, Gregoire) reported that a study published in the journal Alcohol and conducted by Loyola University researchers suggested that “binge drinking ‘significantly disrupts’ the immune systems of healthy young adults.” After asking “15 study participants, with an average age of 27, to drink either four or five shots of vodka depending on their weight – enough to exceed a blood alcohol content of .08,” researchers found after administering blood tests 20 minutes later that immune activity in the participants had spiked. Two and five hours later, however, blood tests showed that participants’ “immune system activity returned to a level lower than when” they were still sober.
