Abstract: The objective of the proposed research is to design an estimation based protection system for induction motors. The proposed dynamic state estimator determines how well the measured data fit the dynamic physically-based model of the induction motor. During the normal operation, system dynamics or external fault conditions, the fit is well within the accuracy of the meters. If the motor has internal faults, the discrepancies in the measured quantities and the estimated quantities require the relay to take actions in a short time. This new protection system needs minimum settings, without the coordination requirement with the other protection functions, which significantly reduces the possibilities of relay misoperations. The scheme is implemented in an object-oriented algebraic quadratic companion form, and it can be applied to other kinds of motors with minor changes.
