GT Museum participates in Blue Star Museums program

Primary tabs

For the fourth year, the Robert C. Williams Museum of Papermaking will be participating in the Blue Star Museums program this summer, a collaboration across the United States offering free or reduced admission or special programs to active duty military and their families.

Blue Star Museums is a partnership among the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense (DoD) and more than 2,000 museums across America. The program kicks off on Memorial Day (Monday, May 30) and runs through Labor Day (Monday, Sept. 5).

The museum, located in the Paper Tricentennial Building on 10th Street, is free to the public, but Virginia Howell, the museum’s education curator, said the participation in the Blue Star Museum program is a way to say “thank you” to military families. “The opportunity to thank them for their service and to be able to share cultural treasures is something we are proud of,” she said.

NEA Chairman Jane Chu added, “The Blue Star Museums program is a fun, free activity for military families to enjoy during the summer months. The program is also a great way for service member families to connect to their new communities, and it can provide a meaningful way for families to reconnect after deployment. The Blue Star Museums program is also a perfect way for the arts community to say ‘thank you’ to our service members and their families for the sacrifices they make on our behalf, every day.”

Blue Star Families Chief Executive Officer Kathy Roth-Douquet said the program has grown into a nationally recognized program that service members and their families look forward to each year. “It helps bring our local military and civilian communities together, and offers families fun and enriching activities in their home towns. We are thrilled with the continued growth of the program and the unparalleled opportunities it offers.”

All summer long, Blue Star Museums will share stories through social media. Follow Blue Star Museums on Twitter @NEAarts and @BlueStarFamily, #bluestarmuseums, on Facebook, and read the NEA Art Works blog for weekly stories on participating museums and exhibits.

The museum is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free. You may contact the office at 404-894-5700 or 404-894-5726.
