"Mathematical Foundations as a Key Enabler of Agile Human Performance in Visual Analytics Environments"

Abstract:

Mathematical foundations of knowledge are intrinsic to making visual analytics environments possible; in the field of visualization each advance in perceptual and cognitive ability to more challenging and abstract problems has been enabled by advances in mathematical foundations.  The new generation of visual analytics systems call for augmenting agile human perception and critical thought about complex information spaces; they will be humanistic, perceptual, and cognitive.  These environments will need to express a deep level of knowledge derived from changing content but more importantly be adaptive to the shifting needs and insights
of their users.  It is the speaker's position that mathematically achieving this level of adaptation will be a key enabler for the next generation of visual analytics systems.

Bio:

Alan Turner  is a U.S. Government research scientist who has been developing visual analytics as a problem solving method and applying it to a wide range of our most challenging problems.   Coming originally from the research community, Alan has publications and patents in the field  and has been active in venues such as  the NVAC to help our community develop this exciting field.  While at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory he helped build a visual analytics team, create new and powerful systems, and articulate a research strategy as part of the "Illuminating the Path" team.
