A panel of leaders will speak on lessons learned from Flint for housing, public health, environmental, and other concerned practitioners and advocates to consider about lead poisoning, its prevention, and its consequences.

Panelists include:

Representative Dan Kildee, D-MI-5
Rep. Kildee represents Flint, MI in the U.S. Congress. He recently introduced HR 4479, a bill to provide emergency assistance related to the Flint water crisis; with Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI-6), he co-authored HR 4470, the Safe Drinking Water Act Improved Compliance Awareness Act, which passed the House of Representatives 416-2 on February 10, 2016.

Professor Marty Kaufman, Professor and Chair, Department of Earth and Resource Science, University of Michigan-Flint
Dr. Kaufman’s research focuses on environmental risk assessment, water infrastructure, heavy metals and groundwater contamination. Recently, he led the efforts to map the lead service lines in Flint, Michigan.

Paul Haan, Founding Executive Director, Healthy Homes Coalition of West Michigan
Paul Haan has been recognized for his work with Healthy Homes through the following honors:  Christine Nelson Professional Service to Children Award, Family Futures (2013), Special Tribute, Rep. Schmidt and Governor Granholm, State of Michigan (2011), EPA Children’s Environmental Health Excellence Award (2006), and the Governor’s Hometown Health Hero, Michigan Department of Community Health (2004).

(Note: Representatives of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services were invited, but cannot participate in the panel due to pending litigation)

Also, following the panel: Updates from the Code Enforcement and Policy Working Groups, on: code policy; federal appropriations for lead poisoning prevention, lead hazard control, and healthy homes; and on legislation on lead poisoning pending in the U.S. House and Senate.
