Power of Ten Day at Oak Grove Elementary School

Primary tabs

As part of its STEM Program, Oak Grove Elementary School in DeKalb County conducted a Powers of Ten Day on October 8th.  The entire school participated in a variety of activities to help students increase their understanding of size and scale.  As part of the activities, Joyce Allen set up nine microscope stations.  These stations included USB digital microscopes, optical compound microscopes and iPads with a micro lens.  All 4th and 5th grade students rotated through the microscope stations and were asked to think about how magnification helps them to see details they would not be able to see with just their eyes.  The final station was the Hitachi TM 3000 tabletop Scanning Electron Microscope. With this instrument the students examined the eye of a bee.  After seeing the image with the SEM, the students were then shown the actual size of the bee.  If you would like to find out more about the Powers of Ten Day contact Joyce Allen at joyce.allen@ien.gatech.edu.
