The School of Psychology mourns the passing of Dr. E. Jo Baker, former Professor of Psychology and Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs. Dr. Baker received her PhD from Emory University in 1962 and joined the faculty of the School of Psychology shortly thereafter. She spent the next 16 years teaching in the School of Psychology. In 1978, she was offered a one-year appointment as Assistant to the Vice President for Academic Affairs, which set her on the path to become Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs in 1979, where she remained until her 1993 retirement.

Dr. Baker’s contributions to Georgia Tech were plentiful.  In addition to exceptional teaching, she was among the founders of Georgia Tech President’s Scholarship Program, one of the earliest merit scholarship programs in the Institute.  In 2001, the E. Jo Baker Outstanding Presidential Scholarship award, given annually to the senior President’s scholar who best demonstrates significance in scholarship, leadership, and service, was established in recognition of her contribution to the development of the program.  Further, her tireless work at Georgia Tech and in Academic Affairs in general drew national recognition. She was a member of the American Association of University Administrators, the National Association for Institutional Research, and served on the Board of Directors for the National Physical Science Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities and Women.  Please click here to read more about Dr. Baker’s exceptional life and legacy.
