The International Symposium on Facility Management Standardization and Research hosted by the College of Architecture's Culture of Research award winner Kathy Roper of the School of Building Construction, along with Matthew Tucker and Liverpool John Moores University, School of Built Environment, was successfully completed last Friday, May 22, 2015.  Forty attendees gathered in the newly renovated Caddell Building, home to the School of Building Construction, to hear facility management executives from IFMA and RICS address the state of standardization and research needs.  The workshop portions of the symposium provided the opportunity for all attendees to discuss key themes and issues, while group discussions helped to prioritize the concepts from the group discussions.

Among the key research initiatives identified as priorities for near future research, included:  Define values of smart buildings from FM perspectives; Value structuring; Operational level use of new technologies; Aging workforce within FM; and Big data implications for FM.  All of these issues sub-topics which will provide researchers a broad base to launch new research projects, as well as expand existing basic research in these areas.  Key themes for standardization focused on the strategic, tactical and operational levels of built environment management, with numerous sub-topics, as well.  Participants praised the outcomes and attendees left energized toward continuing the interactions developed in Atlanta during the symposium.
