Summer in the City: Atlanta Offers Plenty of Affordable Fun

Primary tabs

Although campus may be quieter during the summer, Atlanta offers plenty of options to keep you busy outside of class, work, or internships. If you find yourself with some down time this summer, here are some free (or cheap) things to do in and around the city.

See a movie: If you’re a movie-lover, you’re in luck. Throughout Atlanta, multiple venues are hosting movies series this summer. Atlantic Station will be screening movies in Central Park every Thursday through August 13. Georgia Tech’s summer movie series, Dodd after Dark, is hosted in Bobby Dodd Stadium, with The Imitation Game showing on June 26, and Furious 7 on July 10. Get outside: Although Atlanta is a major city, there are plenty of outdoorsy things to do. The Atlanta BeltLine, located in midtown, is a great trail to walk, run, and bike. Built along a historic rail corridor (and conceived by a Georgia Tech graduate student), the BeltLine links some of Atlanta’s great neighborhoods, so there’s also a chance you’ll learn something new about the city as you explore.

Piedmont Park is another outdoor haven in Atlanta. This park is home to many events and festivals throughout the summer, so be sure to check its event calendar to stay up to date.

A short trip outside the city, Stone Mountain is another popular destination for outdoor events and activities. Some require a ticket, but many are free once you’ve paid the vehicle entry fee (bicyclists and pedestrians enter at no charge). Visitors can hike the mountain and nature trails at no extra charge, see several exhibits, and also enjoy Stone Mountain’s renowned Lasershow, which runs on select weekend nights throughout the summer.

Get cultured: If you’re looking for a way to experience Atlanta’s culture this summer, check out some free festivals. The Virginia Highland Summerfest is coming up June 6-7, and the fifth annual Atlanta Ice Cream Festival is guaranteed to be a hit in the peak of the summer heat in July. The festival will not only bring in unique ice cream vendors, but also fitness and nutrition sponsors who will show guests how to stay in shape while still enjoying summer treats. Get a discount: Your BuzzCard can do more than buy lunch at a dining hall or let you in a campus building. As your official student ID, it also gets you discounts at places around the city such as the Center for Civil and Human Rights, College Football Hall of Fame, High Museum of Art, Atlanta History Center, Zoo Atlanta, Shakespeare Tavern, and movie theaters.
