Office of the Arts Announces the 2015-16 Arts@Tech Performance Season

Primary tabs

The Office of the Arts at Georgia Tech announces the 2015-16 Arts @ Tech performance season, the first under the leadership of Madison Cario, director of Arts @ Tech.

The theme of the new season is “Get Your Game On!” and reflects a new excitement and expanded mission for the arts at Georgia Tech.

The season includes 25 music, dance, theater, and spoken word performances – many of which feature community and campus engagement experiences and school-day matinees in addition to evening performances.

The 2015-16 season will make connections to the different games we play, be they metaphorical connections or literal. Director Madison Cario selected the theme of “Get Your Game On!” because of the unique ability games have to unite or divide us in a common interest.

Whether it’s a physical game that requires turf and a ball, a screen and controller, or the games of language, gender, and dress, games are a performative part of our everyday existence capable of both uniting and dividing.

“This season we showcase productions, installations, experiences and performances that integrate dance, theater, live electronic music, sound, collage, spoken word, AI, video mapping, robotics, gravity, architecture, interactive media and live design,” Cario states. “We will present works that ask questions about what it means to be a person and the role of art and technology in the presentation of self, the presentation of culture, the presentation of equity.

We will wrestle with universal themes and everyday epics: How do I find love? What brings me joy? How will I get there? Why am I here? What do I want to do with my life? How can I make a difference in this world?

In these works, we will extract and highlight our choreographic obsession with how we wear our identity – real and digital - working with themes of race, drag, gender, and the “other” as sources of power. How do we get in the game and stay in the game?”

The Arts @ Tech season features multiple residency programs and features new two-year collaborations with artists Marc Bamuthi Joseph and GLO ATL. Marc Bamuthi Joseph will work on campus as he develops his new show about soccer: /peh LO tah/.

GLO ATL will create The Yard, a cultural mapping experiment of the Georgia Tech campus. The project is a multidimensional approach to cognitive thinking and feeling on the campus, uncovering and documenting cultural resources, and thinking afresh about societies, communities, and all forms of social interaction.

In addition, Arts @ Tech is enhancing its commitment to K-12 arts education, offering school-day matinees and educational engagement programs.
