GT Delegation Attends Georgia International Leadership Conference

Primary tabs

On February 27th, 11 Georgia Tech students and two OIE advisors headed to the Georgia International Leadership Conference (GILC) in Rock Eagle, Georgia to spend the weekend refining their leadership and presentation skills, learning about global competency, and networking with students from around the state of Georgia.

The Georgia International Leadership Conference brought together nearly 200 students representing 20 different universities and colleges from around the state of Georgia. Upon arrival, students participated in a service project at the Oliver N. Worley Environmental Educational Center and a four-time Emmy award-winner opened the conference as the keynote speaker. The next couple of days were spent in student-run presentations and activities aimed at global competency.

The conference is student-run and students present on a myriad of topics related to leadership in a global world, intercultural communication and relationships, challenging stereotypes, and success within student organizations. The conference also gives students a chance to experience cultural simulations to deepen their understanding of what it means to be a global citizen and traveler.

A total of six Georgia Tech students presented on topics such as: making friends while traveling, finding their identity through travel, how Chinese characters are built, censorship in a digital world, and an international student spoke about making friends in the U.S. Our Georgia Tech delegation was the only student group to run a cultural simulation at the conference and got rave reviews for their performances! Three GT students served as peer leaders and took the responsibility of ensuring that the conference ran successfully.

GILC takes place each spring semester for globally-minded students and OIE will distribute information when applications open next November. You can find more information about the conference on the website at gilc.weebly.com.
