Title: Senseable Mobility
Abstract:
The near-future of mobility will be radically transformed by pervasive deployment of sensors, networked technology, and the big data that they generate. These advances, hand-in-hand with self-driving technology, intelligent transportation systems, new forms of design and applications as well as electric vehicles, are poised to revolutionize urban flows. The distinction between individual and mass transportation systems will erode, as public and private mobility is blurred. In this talk we present the activities at MIT Senseable City Lab focused on a future in which extensive ride and vehicle sharing – enabled by dimensions of autonomous driving such as the optimized vehicle relocation – will provide personalized, on-demand mobility with modular car concepts addressing the specific requirements of cities. The broad spectrum of smart mobility applications will result in a drastic reduction of circulating vehicles, travel times, emissions, and parking infrastructure, presenting enormous benefits for urban communities. The research activity at SCL seeks to understand and impact these trends through the design of future urban mobility systems.

Speaker bio:
Paolo Santi is a Research Scientist at MIT Senseable City Lab where he leads the MIT-Fraunhofer Ambient Mobility initiative, and he is a Senior Researcher at the Istituto di Informatica e Telematica del CNR. His research interest is in the
modeling and analysis of complex systems ranging from wireless multi hop
networks to sensor and vehicular networks and, more recently, smart mobility and
intelligent transportation systems. In these fields, he has contributed more than 100 scientific papers and two books. Dr Santi has been involved in the technical and organizing committee of several conferences in the field, and he is/has been an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing, the IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems, Computer Networks, and Guest Editor of the Proceedings of the IEEE. Dr. Santi is a member of the IEEE Computer Society and has recently been recognized as Distinguished Scientist by the Association for Computing Machinery.
