Tracking Your Way to Multicultural Competence- The Next Steps

Primary tabs

The Division of Student Affairs will host a Multicultural Competence (MC) workshop with Dr. Amy Reynolds this Tuesday, October 14, 2014.  The Division started it’s initial efforts in May 2010 with a full-day workshop conducted by Dr. Amy Reynolds who co-authored the book, Multicultural Competence in Student Affairs.  Here is the link to the summary article for that book.

As a result of this first full-day workshop the Division formed a Multicultural Competence Committee co-chaired by Dr. Toti Perez and Dean Stephanie Ray.  The original committee developed the MC Strategic Plan.

Through the good work of the MC Committee a three-level Multicultural Competence Certificate was developed to address staff Participation, Engagement, and Action. The workshop this coming Tuesday does count towards the certificate in lieu of MC 101. Many of you are working on this certificate now, but if not, it’s not too late to get started!   MC Certificate criteria and details can be found on the MCC website.

Recently, Dr. Reynolds has co-authored a new book, Creating Multicultural Change on Campus.  Based off this new book, this workshop will provide the opportunity to discuss multicultural competence in general, but also allow time to break into groups, drill down and identify the specific MC competence (awareness, knowledge, and skills) necessary to do our jobs effectively.  An opportunity to reflect on what we have learned about multicultural competence will close the workshop, with dialogue about how we each impact the journey moving forward.

The workshop will be held in the Ferst Center galleries with the following schedule:

            - 8:30am – 9:00am                 Continental Breakfast

            - 9:00am – 12:00pm              Workshop for the Division

            - 12:00pm – 1:00pm              MC Committee lunch with Dr. Reynolds

            - 3:00pm – 4:00pm                VPSA Cabinet meets with Dr. Reynolds

Please make every effort to attend, as this workshop is an excellent opportunity to further the Division’s Multicultural Competence. It should be a very engaging morning!
