Refugees, ISIS and State Collapse in the Middle East

Georgia Tech's Center for International Strategy, Technology, and Policy welcomes Dr. Isa Afacan for a discussion of his experiences in the border city of Gaziantep, Turkey during the Syrian Civil War.

Gaziantep is home to almost a half -million Syrian refugees, and is directly across the border from the ISIS-controlled city of Jarablus. Dr. Afacan, who taught at the city’s Zirve University for the last four years, has lived and worked at the nexus of the ongoing Middle East crisis. 

Afacan is a professor of International Relations at Turgut Ozal University in Ankara, Turkey. He earned his PhD from Florida International University in Miami, Fl.
