PRE-TEACHING GoSTEM 2014- 2015 INTERNSHIPS

Georgia Tech Pre-Teaching and the GoSTEM program have partnered to offer students internship opportunities to explore K -12 teaching as a career during the Fall of 2014 and/or Spring of 2015.

 What is Pre-Teaching?

The Georgia Tech Pre-Teaching Program assists students and alumni who are interested in becoming K-12 teachers and offers numerous opportunities to explore teaching as a career option. Information about the Pre-Teaching Program can be found at www.preteaching.gatech.edu.

 What is GoSTEM?

The GoSTEM program is a partnership between Georgia Tech and Gwinnett County Public Schools to enhance the educational experience of Latino students in Georgia and strengthen the pipeline of these students into post-secondary STEM education.  More information can be found at www.gostem.gatech.edu.

 Positions Available

Five Mentor Intern positions are available during each semester, Fall 2014 and Spring 2015. Mentor Interns determine their weekly work schedules and have the option of working at the high school only or at the middle and high schools. Mentor Intern duties are:

 High School Duties

• Tutor mathematics, science, and the SAT/ACT each week.
• Meet with students weekly to complete activities that assist in preparing for postsecondary matriculation such as college and scholarship research, resume writing, and completing applications.
• Work at Meadowcreek High School.
• Specific work schedules will be determined later but work hours must fall within school hours of 7:15 AM - 2:15 PM Monday through Friday and 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. during after school tutoring on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

 Middle School Duties

• Work in teams of 2 to engage a group of 15 students in weekly hands-on STEM activities.
• Work with students to create a blog to document their experiences in the program.
• Work at Lilburn and/or Radloff Middle Schools.
• Work on Tuesdays and/or Wednesdays from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m.

All Mentor Interns are required to work 20 hours per week from August 18 – December 5, 2014 if they enroll in the Fall semester and January 12 – April 24, 2015 if they enroll in the Spring semester.  Mentor Interns must attend a mandatory pre-service training on a Friday evening and Saturday as well as attend monthly two-hour trainings throughout each semester.

 Funding and Credit Hours

Mentor Intern positions qualify forsix internship audit credit hours through the Georgia Tech Division of Professional Practice. Interns do not pay tuition or fees for the audit credit hours. The GoSTEM program provides the funding for the internships.  The pay rate is $11 hour for the entire program. Overtime pay is not available.

Employment Responsibilities

Interns will abide by all policies set forth by the GoSTEM program and the Georgia Tech Division of Professional Practice.  Interns are responsible for carrying out all assigned responsibilities.

 Eligibility

• current Georgia Tech student and in good academic standing
• must pass a criminal background and sexual predator check
• must receive clearance from a financial aid advisor if receiving assistance
• must receive clearance from an academic advisor
• may not be employed elsewhere by Georgia Tech

Students receiving financial aid must discuss the internship with a financial aid advisor before applying since some grants and scholarships have minimum credit hour requirements and other specific policies. Students must also discuss the internship with an academic advisor to insure that participation does not conflict with projected graduation dates or other academic goals.
