GSU Law: The Great Senior Sell-Off

The Great Senior Sell-Off and What it Means for Metropolitan Atlanta by Dr. Chris Nelson

Retiring Boomers and shifting housing preferences are only the latest blows to the suburban dream. Of the 20.1 million senior households that will attempt to sell their homes between 2015 and 2030, the University of Utah researcher Arthur C. Nelson estimates that 7.4 million won’t be able to find people to buy them—an imbalance that could be extreme enough to trigger a reprise of the 2008 panic. Nelson, Ph.D., FAICP, is Presidential Professor and Director of the Metropolitan Research Center at the University of Utah where he is also Adjunct Professor of Finance and Co-Director of the Master of Real Estate Development program. In fall 2014, he will become Professor of Planning and Real Estate Development, and Associate Dean for Research, in the College of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture at the University of Arizona in Tucson. FYI – this is a brown bag lunch (bring your own lunch).
