A multidisciplinary team of building construction and architecture undergraduate students, coached by School of Building Construction Assistant Professor Pardis Pishdad-Bozorgi, won second place in the Design-Build Category at the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Region II Student Competition.  The annual competition involves a simulation of a real project delivered through the Design-Build process.  The project consists of three deliverables: I. Request For Qualification (RFQ) Response; II. Request For Proposal (RFP) Response; and III. Response to addendums and further modification and development of the original proposal.  The competing teams completed the first two phases under the guidance and leadership of their coach prior to the competition.  The third phase was completed at the competition site in Peachtree City, Georgia from October 30th to November 1st, 2013.

This year’s project was a corporate, build-to-suit, class A office building (125,000 SF) with parking and was to be constructed on a 2.84 acre site with challenging topography and extremely varied soil conditions. The teams were evaluated based on their proposed programming of the building, parking layout, and site development; the civil, architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing conceptual design of the building, parking, and site development; interior design and space planning; construction management services; quality control; safety procedures; schedule and construction planning; cost estimate; use of technology in Design-Build project delivery; and presentation skills.

The Georgia Tech Design-Build team members included School of Building Construction students Blake Carson, Christa Kelly, John Kennedy, Rebecca Ramia, Christopher Sovchen, and School of Architecture student Olivia King.  The team came out ahead of several competitive peer institutions. Region II of the ASC includes 17 universities in the southeastern United States.
