Student ratings of instruction are one of the most controversial topics in institutions of higher education.  How valid are these ratings? How seriously should faculty take them?   How appropriate are they for administrators to use when making decisions about instruction?

Nira Hativa, Professor Emeritus at Tel-Aviv University (TAU) and former director of their Center for the Advancement of Teaching, will highlight the extensive research about student ratings of instruction as well as her own studies at Stanford University and at TAU in her guest lecture at Georgia Tech on August 26th.  She will address issues regarding misperceptions, concerns, and reservations related to student ratings, use of the Overall Teaching item, and use of student open responses/written comments.
